Patterns That Hold Us

The Journaling Muse – Issue #39 Patterns That Hold Us

A soft space to reflect, reconnect, and create with feeling.

Dear Reader,

There are places where I feel my energy contract,
as if the air itself remembers an old story about who I should be.

Each time I return there, the familiar roles wait—dutiful, careful, quiet.
Each time I leave, I breathe a little easier, remembering that freedom is also a geography of the heart.

It isn’t the place itself that holds me;
it’s the pattern—the invisible script that still believes
I must earn love through perfection, or keep peace through silence.

These invisible systems—our paradigms—aren’t just thoughts.
They’re the unseen rules we learned to live by, shaping what we think is realistic, safe, or allowed.
Yet none of them are truth. They were written by others.

Journaling and art help us loosen their hold—
because on the page, we can practice new freedom
long before we live it fully in the world.

Freedom doesn’t always require moving far away.
Sometimes it begins by refusing to breathe the same old air within.

Journaling Prompts

  1. What belief or “rule” still feels like a wall in my mind?
  2. Whose voice do I hear when I doubt myself?
  3. If I could think 100% freely, what would I allow myself to want?

Circle one sentence that feels alive in your body. That’s your doorway.

Creative Play

Paint or collage the space between where you are and where you want to be.
Let texture and colour speak what words can’t.
Each honest mark is a step toward freedom.
