The Symbols We Carry

#5 The Journaling Muse
The Symbols We Carry – A Personal Collection

Dear [Name],

Have you ever noticed certain symbols showing up again and again in your life? A shape, a pattern, an ancient mark that just feels right—as if it belongs to you?

From alchemical glyphs to aboriginal patterns, from the eye of Horus to the swirling motifs of Indonesia, symbols have a way of calling to us. We may not always know why, but they become part of our creative language.

This week, instead of finding one defining symbol, let’s collect and explore the ones that speak to us.

Your Art Journaling Challenge: Gather Your Personal Symbols

1️⃣ Symbol Safari: Flip through books, scroll through images, or take a walk—what symbols, marks, or patterns catch your eye? Sketch or paste them into your journal.

2️⃣ Ancient Inspiration: Explore alchemy, aboriginal art, Egyptian hieroglyphs, or Indonesian batik. Which ones feel familiar or meaningful?

3️⃣ Reoccurring Motifs: Have you noticed certain shapes appearing in your work—spirals, circles, hands, animals? Collect and reflect on them.

4️⃣ Create Your Own Language: Use dots, lines, swirls, or icons to represent emotions, memories, or dreams.

5️⃣ Layer & Play: Combine multiple symbols into a visual story—let them overlap, transform, and evolve.

📖 Journal Reflection:

  • Which symbols have been with you for years?
  • Do certain cultures or traditions feel more connected to you?
  • What do these symbols evoke—strength, mystery, transformation?

Literature Thought: The Timelessness of Symbols

"Symbols are the language of something invisible spoken in the visible world." — Friedrich Nietzsche

Symbols are never just decoration—they hold stories, memories, and unseen meanings. The ones we collect tell a story about us, even if we don’t fully understand why.

So this week, let’s gather, explore, and let the symbols speak for themselves. No need for logic—just intuition and curiosity.

I’d love to know—what symbols feel like yours? Do you already have a few that keep showing up in your life? Hit reply and share!
